Nagalingam
Age: 40
Type of boat: Fibre Reinforced Plastic Boat
Village: Panithitu
District: Puducherry

Nagalingam is a fisherman who hails from Panithitu a small fishing village in the Union Territory of Puducherry. He owns a small fiber boat in which he ventures into the sea for fishing. He once came across an announcement made by the Village Knowledge Centre at Pannithitu through the Public Address System regarding the Fisher Friend Mobile Application. Interested, Nagalingam registered to be a pilot test user for the Fisher Friend Mobile Application.

He was selected to be a pilot user by the Village Knowledge Centre. He was trained on how to use the application and access fisheries related livelihood information such as wave height, wind speed and direction, weather forecast, potential fishing zone, market information, and latest fisheries related news alerts and fisheries related government schemes.

Initially for the first one week there were severe rains and he did not venture into the sea. Later he started venturing into the sea. On October 23 2008 the application predicted high waves accompanied by severe winds. Nagalingam decided not to venture into the sea based on the advice and as predicted the conditions in the sea were rough on that day. Nagalingam shares that because of such predictive information it is possible to maintain caution and decide whether or not to venture into the sea. He shares that this is a very useful feature and is very beneficial in preventing rough conditions and economic loss while at sea.
